LLPSI in English: Chapter 16: The Storm

Italy lies between two seas, of which the one that lies above Italy is called "Mare Superum" or "Hadriaticum", and the other that lies below is called "Mare Inferum" or "Tuscum". The length and breadth of the sea between Europe and Africa is called "Mare Nostrum" (Our Sea) by the Romans. The city of Rome is not located next to the sea but to the river Tiber, twenty pasuum from the sea. However, as the water is not deep there, big ships are unable to sail there. Thus only small ships arrive at Rome. All types of ships are able to go to Ostia, for it is a maritime town which has a big port. It lies at the estuary of Tiber ("Ostium" or "os" of a river is the place that a river flows into the sea; Ostia is located at the place that Tiber flows into Mare Inferum.) Other maritime towns that have big ports are Brundisium, Ariminium, Genua and Puteoli. All of these maritime towns are located by the sea. ("Ora ma
